Awards / Scholarships

Each year, the department recognizes its outstanding majors by presenting them with departmental awards. Students may nominate themselves or others for the following awards.

The William R. Diem Award goes to the student judged the Outstanding Journalism Graduate. This award goes to a senior. Students may nominate themselves or others for this $200 award.

The Gilson Wright Award for Journalistic Enterprise goes to someone who has shown unusual enterprise in journalistic activity, such as summer and school term internships at outside news media. Students may nominate themselves or others for this $200 award—it is open to all journalism majors.

The Helen B. Woodward Award—worth $500—is also open to all majors. It is awarded to a student whose print and/or broadcast journalism entries are judged to be the best. The entry or entries should have been published or broadcast or be in publishable or broadcast form. The work should have been prepared for campus or off-campus media or done as a class exercise; the work must also have been done within the past year.
